September 2014… Tour Insight… In a short eight minutes of reflection (video below) of the epic eight day siege of Bastogne, WWII Veteran Ed Hallo shares his memories of fighting during the early days of the Battle of the Bulge. Hallo, serving with the 101st Airborne, was among those surrounded in Bastogne in the middle of December, 1944. Hallo shares that his unit was pinned down against the embankment of a railroad track, with Jack’s Woods behind them. At times, in the thick fog and frosty air, Hallo was only yards from German soldiers on the other side of the embankment. Today, the railroad tracks are gone, replaced by a meandering bike path, along a peaceful pasture just east of the town of Foy, Belgium. As our tour group listened to Ed’s story, we had to occasionally “make a hole” to allow cyclists to pass by.
