B-17: Mighty Fortress…tail gunner worked offense and defense.

Aviation enthusiast Steve Groff offers a “fragment” of the many improvements made for the position of the tail gunners…who multi-tasked between offense and defense.  The tail gunner was charged to communicate to the bombardier on the success of his bomb drops, report to the rest of the crew on other planes in the formation, brave frigid wind blasting through the canvas “tail,”  and, with a blurred view through a frost covered window, maneuver, aim and fire twin .50 caliber machine guns at an approaching enemy warbird … all while bucking along at 30,000 feet, perched precariously on a modified bicycle seat.
